Last friday Nicolas and Nathalie, a french couple came to Holland to make a houseboat tour. Three weeks ago they rented our houseboat (click here for details) and were impressed by the boat and the way of living, so they decided to buy a houseboat in the Netherlands (Amsterdam or nearby). I helped them to give an insight on houseboat living in the surroundings of Amsterdam by visiting some houseboats and moorings.
In the morning we started with a visit at Jarr’s; Jarr and Susanne are converting a spits (peniche/ dutch barge: 39×5) and they are still working on the conversion. It will be a beautiful houseboat, the work was in progress, so Nicolas and Nathalie could see what kind of process a conversion is.
After that we passed by a converted fishery ship at the back of the Loods 6. A different kind of ship, with another atmosphere, space, views etcetera. The third visit was a luxe motor in Schellingwoude; it’s for sale by Jon Kok (one of the houseboat brokers in the Netherlands). It’s a loftlike houseboat with a modern interior
In the afternoon we went to a mooring that’s for sale on the Durgerdammerdijk; a nice place, but with the highway very nearby and the non-urban surroundings it was not the place for them. Then we went for a lunch to the Ysbreker along the Amstel; the lunch was perfect, but the moorings we passed by along the Amstel were too much urban.
The houseboat Somoya was the visit to another type of houseboats; a newly build passenger ship. Loftlike, modern and a beautifull terrace and bed and breakfest. When you build a new one it’s possible to make any kind of space you want. The Houthaven is also one of the places in Amsterdam with a lot of houseboats: the area is still in development, so we didn’t went for the moorings but to see some examples of houseboats and the detailing of the houseboats.
Our last visit was outside Amsterdam in Wormerveer, a small houseboat with mooring. We liked the river Zaan and the lifeness of the boats. It’s one of the possibilities for them. After the whole program we went to Pont 13 for a final drink and to evaluate what we have seen. We talked about the best moorings and the kind of houseboat what they wanted. I will try to realize their dream of living on a houseboat in Amsterdam. Perhaps you know a mooring (with houseboat) for them or you also have plans to live on a houseboat and you need some advice in buying the houseboat and/or mooring or the construction/ conversion of the houseboat, you can call (+31623500833) or email me (info@waterloft.nl).
